Assistant Professor of Environmental Horticulture

The Department of Plant, Soil and Environmental Sciences at the University of Maine is seeking applications for an academic-year, tenure track Assistant Professor of Environmental Horticulture effective July 1, 2013.  This position will be 50% teaching and 50% research.

Instructional Responsibilities: This faculty member will be responsible for three undergraduate courses, which are required for Environmental Horticulture majors, and which are critical to helping those students develop problem-solving skills necessary for successful careers.  These courses could include: PSE 424 (Nursery Management), 3 credits each fall semester; and PSE 410 (Plant Propagation), 4 credits each spring semester, or PSE 325 (Turfgrass Management).  In addition, this faculty member will be expected to develop an undergraduate or graduate course in their area of expertise that will be taught in alternate years.

This faculty member will advise undergraduate and graduate students, and contribute to activities of the program, the department and the College of Natural Sciences, Forestry, and Agriculture. There are significant opportunities to collaborate with colleagues on student-focused projects that provide a sense of community within the program.

Research and Scholarship:  The successful candidate will establish a research program with basic and applied components, grounded in a philosophy of sustainability. Examples of possible focus of this research program include adaptation to climate change; plant production and selection; efficient use/management of resources such as water, nutrients and energy; nursery or landscape best management practices; alternatives to invasive species with an emphasis on native plants; and green wall and/or green roof systems. This research program is expected to be based on the needs of Maine’s and New England’s green industry.

A productive record of procurement of external research funds is expected. Extramural funding sources might include national programs such as USDA-NIFA, USDA-NE-SARE and USDA-IPM. In particular, this position is well positioned to compete for USDA-NIFA funding for projects that address mitigation and adaptation of agriculture to variations in climate. There is strong potential to collaborate on multidisciplinary projects with other faculty members in the program, department, college, university and other institutions.

Outreach:  This position does not include a formal Cooperative Extension appointment, but this faculty member has an excellent opportunity to contribute to the ornamental horticulture industry’s future by developing a strong applied research program; by contributing to state and regional meetings, conferences and field days; and by developing research relationships with members of the green industry.

Qualifications: A Ph.D. is required by date of hire in a relevant area of horticulture.  Documented record of conducting  high-quality scientific research, demonstrated by publication in peer-reviewed journals is required.  Undergraduate teaching experience in Environmental Horticulture is also required.  Effective oral and written communication skills are required.  Desired qualifications include demonstrated record of  obtaining  funding in the form of competitive grants or foundation support, and experience in collaborative research and/or teaching.

To apply, submit a cover letter, C.V., statements of teaching and research interests, and copies of graduate academic tarnscripts in PDF format to: Kate.Flanagan@umit.maine.edu, using the subject heading “Environmental Horticultural Search.” Please contact three references and ask them to send letters of recommendation in PDF format to Kate.Flanagan@umit.maine.edu, using the subject heading “Environmental Horticulture Reference Letter.” Review of applications will begin December 30, 2012 and will continue until the position is filled. Incomplete applications cannot be considered. Appropriate background checks will be requierd.

Background: The mission of the Department of Plant, Soil and Environmental Sciences, based on a long-standing ‘knowledge-to-action’ ethic, is to educate the next generation of agricultural and natural ecosystem professionals, and to respond to, and anticipate, stakeholder needs through relevant research and outreach.  We are 16 faculty members, home to the Environmental Horticulture (ENH) and Sustainable Agriculture (SAG) undergraduate programs, and advise approximately 30% of the undergraduates in the Ecology and Environmental Sciences (EES) program.  We lead or participate in three M.S. (Horticulture, Sustainable Agriculture and PSE) and two Ph.D. programs (EES and Plant Science).

This position’s teaching assignment includes three courses that are required for students in the department’s growing undergraduate environmental horticulture program.  The research component responds to the needs of Maine’s ornamental horticulture industry, which is currently the state’s fifth largest agricultural commodity, comprising 9.2% of the state’s total farm receipts. This production could rise significantly in the future with increasing urbanization pressure in other Northeast states, global climate change and the increasing demand for native plants. This position is poised to support that growth.

Assistant Professor of Applied Plant Pathology

The Department of Plant, Soil and Environmental Sciences at the University of Maine is seeking applications for an academic-year, tenure track Assistant Professor of Applied Plant Pathology effective July 1, 2013.  This position will be 30% teaching and 70% research.

Instructional Responsibilities:  PSE 457 Plant Pathology is a 4-credit, lab course that is taught each fall semester with an average enrollment of 25.  This is considered a foundational course, required for majors in the plant sciences (Environmental Horticulture and Sustainable Agriculture), and is a popular with students in BIO, EES, and BOT.  As a senior-level course, PSE 457 also attracts M.S. students from horticulture, agriculture, and biological sciences.

The faculty member would also be expected to contribute an alternate-year course contributing to undergraduate and/or graduate programs in the college, as well as providing expertise to graduate thesis committees from a range of disciplines.

Research and Scholarship:  Our intention is to hire an Applied Plant Pathologist, who could work on a range of important specialty crops in Maine, including potatoes, mixed vegetables and ornamentals.  The ideal candidate would aim to balance their 70% research appointment somewhat evenly between applied and basic research activities.  The Department would expect that the research program would utilize field assessments, molecular tools, and other diagnostic techniques contributing plant pathology expertise to helping solve a wide range of problems in Maine agricultural systems.   This would serve stakeholders, ensure competitiveness in current outcome-based grant programs (e.g., Northeast SARE; Northeast IPM; USDA NIFA Organic Research and Extension Initiative; USDA-NIFA Specialty Crop Research Initiative, USDA-NIFA Special Grants, etc.), but also offer opportunities in USDA NIFA Foundational Grant Programs.

Outreach:  While this position does not include a formal Cooperative  Extension  appointment, our goal is to facilitate an applied research program with service to Maine’s agricultural and horticultural sectors.  Thus, participation in state and regional farmer meetings and conferences, field days, and transfer of applied research based information to stakeholders is expected.

Qualifications: A Ph.D. is required by date of hire in an area relevant to plant pathology.  Documented record of conducting  high-quality, applied scientific research, demonstrated by publication in peer-reviewed journals is required.  Effective oral and written communication skills and teaching experience is required .  Desired qualifications include demonstrated  record of obtaining  funding in the form of competitive grants.

To apply, please submit a cover letter, C.V., statements of teaching and research interests, and copies of graduate academic transcripts, in PDF format, to: Kate.Flanagan@umit.maine.edu, using the subject heading “Plant Pathologist Search.”  Also arrange for three letters of recommendation to be sent, also in PDF format, to Kate.Flanagan@umit.maine.edu, using the subject heading ‘Plant Pathologist Reference Letter_Applicant Name.’ Review of applications will begin January 1, 2013 and will continue until the position is filled.  Incomplete applications cannot be considered.  Appropriate background checks will be required.

Plant diseases continue to be a major production constraint to Maine’s potato industry.  High tunnel production, the increase in small-scale, diversified vegetable operations, and greater variability in weather have all contributed to important disease problems for Maine farmers in recent years.  Maine’s potato and greenhouse/nursery industries are presently ranked number 1 and 5, respectively, for the State’s top 5 commodities, with a combined value of nearly $200 million annually; vegetables and fruits are the top two agricultural exports, exceeding $80 million annually.  The growing number of small-scale, diversified vegetable farmers in the state would further benefit from the expertise of this position.
